(See Call for Proposals section for complete details and instructions for proposal submissions) PROPOSAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE: April 15, 2008 Notification of selection: Mid-May 2008 Theme: EXPLORING SLA: PERSPECTIVES, POSITIONS, AND PRACTICES Plenary speakers: - Dr. Harald Clahsen (University of Essex) - Dr. Alan Firth (Newcastle University) - Dr. Eva Lam (Northwestern University) - Dr. Richard Schmidt (University of Hawai'i at Manoa) We welcome all areas of second language research, including, but not limited to: - Instructed SLA - Acquisition of grammar and phonology - Child SLA - L2 Processing - Language and learner characteristics - Language and cognition - Discourse and interaction - Language and socialization - Bilingualism and multilingualism - Language and ideology - Literacy development - Learner corpora - Language learning and technology - Second language measurement We ask that ALL abstracts be submitted online via our Open Conference Systems website. The system will open in early February. Proposals will not be accepted via email or post. All abstracts will be submitted to blind peer review by international experts on the topic. PAPERS & POSTERS: Individual papers will be allotted 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes for discussion). Posters will be displayed for a full day. Posters are intended for one-on-one discussion or reports of work in progress. Authors must be present to respond to questions from attendees during the allocated time. Submission guidelines: Abstracts are limited to 300 words. The title should be no longer than 12 words. Also include a 50-word summary of your presentation to be published in the conference program. Only one abstract submission per person, but you may co-author on others. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2008. Getting prepared for your paper or poster proposal submission: Before you go to SLRF 2008 online proposal submission site, create your 300-word abstract as either a RTF or a Microsoft Word file. To facilitate blind peer review, we ask you to do the following: 1. Remove the name(s) of the author(s) submitting this proposal from the abstract, with "Author" and year used for any references cited, instead of the authors' real name, paper title, etc. 2. Save any Microsoft Word document by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Save As"; clicking "Tools" (or "Options" in a Mac); clicking "Security"; selecting "Remove personal information from file properties on save"; and clicking "Save.” For the presentation title and your 50-word summary, you will be asked to directly input them in the online submission form. All prepared and ready to submit? Click here. COLLOQIUA: The colloquia consist of individual paper presentations that relate to a specific or related topic of interest. It is offered a 2-hour session, and we suggest 20-minutes for each paper (plus 5-10 minutes for discussion), depending on the number of presenters. Submission guidelines: Each colloquia session will have an organizer and a discussant. Details on the organizer and the discussant should be included in the submission; the organizer and the discussant can be the same person. The organizer is responsible for securing the cooperation of all the presenters before the abstract is submitted online, as well as the format and content of the colloquium submission. The discussant of each colloquium is the person responsible for providing commentaries afterwards. Proposals for colloquia will include studies with a clearly defined common theme. The colloquium abstract as well as its individual paper abstracts should be limited to 300 words each. Sufficient detail should be provided to allow peer reviewers to judge the merit of the proposal and its parts. 50-word summaries for the colloquium as well as its individual papers should also be included. All titles should be no longer than 12 words.
